There's a Hole in the Floor, Dear Lisa, Dear Lisa

There's a hole in the floor, dear Lisa, a hole.  Then fix it, dear Dana, dear Dana, dear Dana...

Just a minor set back in the bathroom remodel.  Last night, my husband finished putting the screws in the new drywall he put up.  Have I told you what a fabulous screw-er he is?  Ooooh he is soooo great!  Take a look at the pictures.  Notice how the screws are in a nice straight row all evenly spaced apart.  Damn he's good and that's not even his normal everyday job.

Anyway, he was standing on a step ladder and the leg of the ladder fell through the floor.  All I heard was Crash, Boom, Bang, and a few cuss words.  I went running into the bathroom to see if my husband was okay.  I found him standing over a hole in the floor.  Immediately, I knew what happened.

Earlier in the week, he showed me how weak the floor was due to termite damage long before we owned the house.  I'm just thankful I wasn't sitting on the toilet when the floor decided to give way.  I would have found myself sitting in the dirt crawl space under the house.  Luckily he wasn't hurt and he'll see to fixing it this weekend.
With what shall I fix it, dear Lisa, dear Lisa? With what shall I fix it, dear Lisa, with what?  With wood, dear Dana, dear Dana, dear Dana.  With wood, dear Dana, dear Dana, with wood.
(The incident reminded me of this song and my days of teaching Kindergarten.)

He's in the process of mudding the drywall and should be done with the final coat Sunday.  The tile guy comes on Tuesday.  Hip Hip Hooray!  I won't be here to have to deal with anything that goes wrong.  I'm going to a technology conference for most of the week.  I'm hoping I'll have a wonderful surprise for me and you when I return.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello Studs!

Bye Bye Ugly Pink Bathroom, Hello Studs.  So long peeling and cracked paint that seeped smoke from previous owners. Good riddance, waiting for a fire to start, wall heater.  Farewell to the screwed up tape joints and pink floral boarder.  Summer Project # 2 is well underway.  My husband spent last night tearing down the drywall, tile and flooring.  We are still in the process of getting estimates for tile in the shower and on the floor.  By the end of this weekend we should know who we are going to go with.  We've already picked out the tile, vanity, and vanity top we want to use.  It will be worth it when it's all done.  We've waited so long to do this.  In the past our money was always tied up in fertility treatments so we were unable to do this sort of stuff.  My husband and I made a deal that we each get to design our own bathroom.  This bathroom is his design.  My bathroom will be next.  He gets the bigger bathroom because he thinks he has a better eye for design and color.  Truth be told he does have a good eye.  It tends to be on the neutral side but it works.  My bathroom will be next.  He just informed me that it will be my bathroom under his supervision.  We'll see about that.  This is not a design on a dime project but we are trying to stay within our budget.
P.S. I have so much time to read because I'm always sitting around waiting for a crew of workers or someone to give me an estimate.  ;-)

Summer Project # 1

Our first summer project was to get our house repiped.  Yesterday a whole team of men came and worked on repiping the house.  Each person had their specific job.  One guy was out front digging the trench to the main line at the sidewalk, another guy was working on the laundry room and new water heater, one guy was working on the kitchen and under the house, the final guy was working on the bathrooms.  They were a well oiled machine.  The job went as smooth as silk and they finished in one day.  The inspector came today and did a quick check of their work and cleared the job for the patchers to come.  Tomorrow morning the patchers will be here to repair the holes in the walls and the stucco on the outside of the house.  We have waited a long time to do this and were finally able to afford it.  It feels good to be able to check one major project off the list so early in the summer.  Our next project is remodeling our front bathroom.  My husband will be in the process of tearing it down to the studs very soon. Here's a few pictures of repipe day.

The Husband is Away the Wife Will Play

This weekend my husband went to a bachelor party for two of his friends. His friends are getting married a month apart and decided to have their parties together since the same people would be attending. So while my husband was away I decided to surprise him with a little planting.

Our Front Walk Way

It's amazing what a few flowers can do to a back patio.

Out with the Old, In with the New

Over the past few weeks Dana has been busy replanting our front yard.  Now he has moved onto the back.  He thought it would be a good time to replace our back fence since our dog is six and has stopped digging and tearing up our plants.  Before planting the backyard we needed to replace the back fence.  It was old and falling over, besides the termites had nothing left to eat.  We started early Friday morning taking down the old fence and getting ready for the new.  Dana's dad, Hans came over to help us.  Once the old fence was down they had to reset a post and hang new stringers (I think that's what they're called).  Believe it or not it took all day.  Hans returned early Saturday with Dana's step brother, Chris.  They put up the new slats while I supervised.  They called me the micro manager. I told them I had to because I was working with the Three Stooges.  It was a fun time.   After the boys left, Dana had to finish putting all the screws in the fence.  It's just about complete and hopefully we'll be able to start planting next weekend.  I'm pretty proud of Dana, he's becoming quite the handyman.  Here are a few before and after pictures.
